Russia Announces Plans to Send Oil Aid to Cuba
According to the embassy, Moscow and Cuban authorities are coordinating logistics to facilitate supplies as part of the emergency response. “In the near future, there is expected delivery of oil and petroleum products from Russia to Cuba as humanitarian aid,” the mission told the Russian daily Izvestia.
The diplomatic post added that it is in ongoing contact with Russian state carrier Aeroflot and Cuban aviation officials to assist Russian nationals amid travel disruptions caused by the fuel shortage. Aeroflot has committed to arranging special flights from Varadero and Havana back to Moscow to repatriate citizens.
Russia’s Ministry of Economic Development has also advised its citizens to avoid travel to Cuba and urged tour operators to halt sales, referencing an “extraordinary situation with fuel supply” on the island.
Cuba’s energy situation deteriorated sharply after the U.S. military captured Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro on Jan. 3, curtailing Venezuelan oil exports that once accounted for a large share of Cuba’s fuel imports. Previously, Venezuela had been a principal supplier of crude and jet fuel to the island.
Russian efforts to provide humanitarian fuel support come as Cuba struggles with widespread shortages that have disrupted transportation and aviation services, prompting several airlines to adjust or suspend flights.
